Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Keep in mind that drug abusers will try to hide their symptoms and deny their substance abuse problems. Marijuana is California's largest cash crop.

The economic burden of substance abuse to the US economy has currently been estimated at a staggering $424 billion annually. Alcohol abuse alone costs nearly $169 billion each year.

Alcohol consumption levels also were associated with tobacco use. Among heavy alcohol users aged 12 or older, 58.3 percent smoked cigarettes in the past month, while only 20.4 percent of non binge current drinkers and 17.2 percent of persons who did not drink alcohol in the past month were current smokers. Smokeless tobacco use and cigar use also were more prevalent among heavy drinkers (11.4 and 18.7 percent, respectively) than among non binge drinkers (2.1 and 4.6 percent) and nondrinkers (2.2 and 2.1 percent).

Driving under the influence of alcohol was associated with age in 2008. An estimated 7.2 percent of 16 or 17 year olds, 16.7 percent of 18 to 20 year olds, and 26.1 percent of 21 to 25 year olds reported driving under the influence of alcohol in the past year. Beyond age 25, these rates showed a general decline with increasing age.

By binding to pain receptors, Vicodin eliminates or greatly reduces the experience of pain; due to the fact that pain is a survivor response, the body quickly adapts to the amount of the drug that is in the system and overrides it so that the individual will begin to feel pain again. The only way to fight this defense in the body is to take more of the drug, therefore developing a tolerance for it and ultimately becoming dependent on it.
