The rate of current marijuana use among teens aged 12 to 17 decreased from 8.2 percent in 2002 to 6.7 percent in 2006 and remained at that level in 2007 and 2008. Significant declines also occurred between 2002 and 2008 for past year marijuana use (from 15.8 to 13.0 percent) and lifetime marijuana use (from 20.6 to 16.5 percent).

Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rate of current illegal drug use was similar for boys (9.8 percent) and girls (9.7 percent). In 2006, male and female adolescents had similar rates of current marijuana use (6.8 and 6.4 percent) and nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics (3.1 and 3.5 percent, respectively).

Like all opioid analgesics, with increasing doses of OxyContin there is increasing pain relief.

In 2008, teens aged 12 to 17 who had MDE during the past year were more likely to report daily cigarette use in comparison with those who did not have MDE during the past year (3.6 vs. 1.8 percent). Similarly, teens who had past year MDE were more likely to report heavy use of alcohol than those who did not have MDE (3.4 vs. 1.8 percent).

Most binge and heavy alcohol users are employed. Among the 43.9 million adult binge drinkers in 2001, 35.4 million (81 percent) were employed either full or part time. Similarly, 9.8 million (80 percent) of the 12.4 million adult heavy drinkers were employed.

According to a fairly recent report by Dr. Kim Mulvihill, Ambien addiction and abuse among teenagers is increasingly becoming a greater concern. Teens are abusing Ambien, many times in combination with alcohol, and Dr. Mulvihill notes that Ambien has been reported to have been used as a date-rape drug.
