Introduction to Ithaca, New York

The New York city of Ithaca, which sits in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, is the county seat of Tompkins County. Named for the Greek island of Ithaca, the city is situated 33 miles northeast of Elmira, 50 miles northwest of Binghamton, and about 60 miles south of Syracuse. Ithaca is noted for being home to Cornell University and also Ithaca College.

By the time of Ithaca's incorporation as a city in 1888, Cornell University had already marked the 20th anniversary of its founding by Ezra Cornell. A few years later, in 1892, W. Grant Egbert founded the Ithaca Conservatory of Music, later to become Ithaca College. During the early 20th century, Ithaca was an important center in the silent film industry, spearheaded by the Wharton brothers, film makers who set up a motion picture studio and shot several silent films at a site which is now Stewart Park. Today Ithaca relies chiefly on education and manufacturing to drive its expanding economy, with a significant amount of support from tourism, viniculture, and high technology. As evidence of the city's success, USA Today ranked Ithaca number one on its list of "Emerging Cities" in March 2004.

Interesting Facts and Statistics:

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002.2003, only five of the States ranked in the highest fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the highest fifth. Colorado had the highest rate of past year cocaine use (3.9 percent) among persons aged 12 or older; the District of Columbia had the highest rate (3.7 percent) among those aged 26 or older; Rhode Island had the highest rate (12.1 percent) among those aged 18 to 25; and Arizona had the highest rate (3.2 percent) among teens aged 12 to 17 (Table B.7). Arizona and Colorado were the only States that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

Teens aged 12 to 17 who had engaged in fighting or other delinquent behaviors were more likely than other teens to have used illegal drugs in the past month. For example, in 2008, past month illegal drug use was reported by 15.9 percent of teens who had gotten into a serious fight at school or work in the past year compared with 7.3 percent of those who had not engaged in fighting, and by 39.8 percent of those who had stolen or tried to steal something worth over $50 in the past year compared with 7.7 percent of those who had not engaged in such theft.

Nationally, almost a quarter (22.8 percent) of all persons aged 12 or older participated in binge use of alcohol in the past month in 2002.2003. In addition to having the lowest rate in the Nation for past month use of alcohol (29.6 percent), Utah had the lowest rate for past month binge use of alcohol among all persons aged 12 or older (15.9 percent). North Dakota had the highest rate among all persons aged 12 or older (31.4 percent) and among persons aged 26 or older (28.4 percent). Most of the States in the top fifth for past month binge use of alcohol for persons aged 12 or older were from the Midwest (six States).

Among unemployed adults aged 18 or older in 2005, 17.1 percent were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the 8.2 percent of those employed full time and 10.4 percent of those employed part time. However, most drug users were employed. Of the 17.2 million current illegal drug users aged 18 or older in 2005, 12.9 million (74.8 percent) were employed either full or part time.

The rate of heavy alcohol use (drinking five or more drinks on the same occasion [i.e., at the same time or within a couple of hours of each other] on each of 5 or more days in the past 30 days) among adults with SPD in the past year was higher (9.4 percent) than the rate reported among adults without SPD in the past year (6.8 percent). Similarly, among adults with SPD, the rate of binge alcohol use (drinking five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the past 30 days) was 28.9 percent, higher than the 23.5 percent among adults who did not meet the criteria for SPD.

Amphetamine users will take depressant drugs, particularly barbiturates, alcohol, and opiates, as a aid sleep or to compensate for amphetamine overdose.
