The number of persons needing treatment for illegal drug use in 2006 (7.8 million) was similar to the number needing treatment in 2002 (7.7 million), 2003 (7.3 million), 2004 (8.1 million), and 2005 (7.6 million). Also, the number of persons needing but not receiving specialty treatment in the past year for an illegal drug use problem in 2006 (6.2 million) was similar to the estimates in 2002 (6.3 million), 2003 (6.2 million), 2004 (6.6 million), and 2005 (6.3 million).
The resulting liquid contains unpurified cocaine alkaloids and may additionally contain waxy material from the leaves. This waxy material can be removed by heating and then cooling the mixture, a process that solidifies the unwanted wax.
In 2008, the number of new nonmedical users of OxyContin? aged 12 or older was 478,000, with an average age at first use of 21.8 years among those aged 12 to 49. Recent studies have indicated that the users of bath salts are male and female and that they range in age from teenagers to being adults in their 40's; the common denominator appeared to be that most of the users appeared to have an extensive substance abuse history.
Among the 17.8 million people who needed but did not receive treatment for an alcohol use problem in 2005, there were 641,000 (3.6 percent) who felt they needed treatment for their alcohol use problem. Of these, 154,000 (24.0 percent) made an effort but were unable to get treatment, and 487,000 (76.0 percent) did not make an effort to get treatment.
In 2008, more than one fifth (23.3 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking. This translates to about 58.1 million people, similar to the estimate in 2007. Binge drinking is defined as having five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the 30 days prior to the survey.
