The number of persons needing treatment for illegal drug use in 2006 (7.8 million) was similar to the number needing treatment in 2002 (7.7 million), 2003 (7.3 million), 2004 (8.1 million), and 2005 (7.6 million). Also, the number of persons needing but not receiving specialty treatment in the past year for an illegal drug use problem in 2006 (6.2 million) was similar to the estimates in 2002 (6.3 million), 2003 (6.2 million), 2004 (6.6 million), and 2005 (6.3 million).

Binge drinking is defined as having five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the 30 days prior to the survey.
