Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Illegal sales of amphetamines winded down after the federal government tightened its control on the production of amphetamines. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) cracked down on "script doctors" who freely handed out the drug.
The number of persons who smoked cigarettes for the first time within the past 12 months was 2.1 million in 2004, not significantly different from the estimates in 2002 (1.9 million) or 2003 (2.0 million). About two thirds of new smokers in 2004 were under the age of 18 when they first smoked cigarettes (67.8 percent).
About 10.1 million persons aged 12 to 20 reported drinking alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview in 2001 (28.5 percent of this age group). Of these, nearly 6.8 million (19.0 percent) were binge drinkers and 2.1 million (6.0 percent) were heavy drinkers. All of these 2001 rates are similar to rates observed in 2000.
The rate of current illegal drug use in the combined 2007-2008 data was lower for pregnant women than for nonpregnant women among those aged 18 to 25 (7.1 vs. 16.2 percent, respectively) and among those aged 26 to 44 (3.0 vs. 6.7 percent). Among women aged 15 to 17, however, those who were pregnant had a higher rate of use than those who were not pregnant (21.6 vs. 12.9 percent).
Although there is a high correlation between State prevalence rates for past month alcohol use and binge use of alcohol, only six States in the top fifth for use of alcohol among persons aged 12 or older also were in the top fifth for binge alcohol use. Similarly, eight States ranked in the lowest fifth for past month alcohol use in that age group also were ranked in the lowest fifth for binge use of alcohol.
The perceived availability among teens decreased between 2002 and 2005 for marijuana (from 55.0 to 51.0 percent), crack (from 26.5 to 25.3 percent), heroin (from 15.8 to 14.0 percent), and LSD (from 19.4 to 15.7 percent). However, the percentage reporting that it would be easy to obtain cocaine showed no decline over this period (25.0 percent in 2002 and 24.9 percent in 2005).
