The overall rate of current illegal drug use among persons aged 12 or older in 2006 (8.3 percent) was similar to the rate in 2005 (8.1 percent) and has remained stable since 2002 (8.3 percent).

Marijuana was the most commonly used illegal drug (15.2 million past month users). Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of past month marijuana use in 2008 (6.1 percent) was similar to the rate in 2007 (5.8 percent).

After withdrawing from opiates, symptoms such as sleeplessness and drug craving can last for months.

The number of people who felt they needed treatment and made an effort to get it among those who needed but did not receive treatment was not statistically different in 2005 (296,000) from the number reported in 2004 (441,000).

Among teens aged 12 to 17 who were both smokers and heavy drinkers in the past month in 2005, 70.9 percent used illegal drugs in the past month, higher than the 3.5 percent among teens who did not drink or smoke in the past month.

In 2006, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an illegal drug use problem was 7.8 million (3.2 percent of the total population). Of these, 1.6 million (0.6 percent of the total population and 20.3 percent of the persons who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility for an illegal drug use problem in the past year. Thus, there were 6.2 million persons (2.5 percent of the total population) who needed treatment but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for an illegal drug use problem in 2006.
