Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Opiate use and addiction is linked to at least half of the major crimes in the U.S.
In 2006, 23.6 million persons aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem (9.6 percent of the persons aged 12 or older). Of these, 2.5 million (1.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older and 10.8 percent of those who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility. Thus, 21.1 million persons (8.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older) needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem but did not receive treatment at a specialty substance abuse facility in the past year. These estimates are similar to the estimates for 2005.
In 2008, during their most recent treatment in the past year, 2.7 million persons aged 12 or older reported receiving treatment for alcohol use, and 947,000 persons reported receiving treatment for marijuana use. (Note that respondents could indicate that they received treatment for more than one substance during their most recent treatment.)
OxyContin was first marketed in 1996 and became a 1.2 billion dollar industry in 2003.
Rates of substance dependence or abuse were associated with current employment status in 2008. A higher percentage of unemployed adults aged 18 or older were classified with dependence or abuse (19.0 percent) than were full time employed adults (10.2 percent) or part time employed adults (11.0 percent).
Among adults aged 18 or older who had MDE in the past year, 65.6 percent received treatment (i.e., saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional or used prescription medication) for depression in the same time period.
