In 2002, the percentage of persons estimated to be dependent on alcohol in the past year was about 45 percent of those who were determined to be dependent on or abusing alcohol in the past year (Tables A.13 and A.14). State estimates for alcohol dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 2.8 percent in Pennsylvania to 5.2 percent in the District of Columbia (Table A.14). Seven of the States in the top fifth for dependence on or abuse of alcohol also could be found in the top fifth for dependence on alcohol for persons aged 12 or older: Colorado, District of Columbia, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and South Dakota. Of the remaining three States in the top fifth for dependence on alcohol, Michigan ranked in the second fifth for alcohol dependence or abuse, Louisiana in the middle fifth, and South Carolina in the next-to-lowest fifth. The highest rates for alcohol dependence occurred in the 18 to 25 age group, with Rhode Island having the highest rate.about 12.0 percent.
Drug addiction can be described as a pattern of repetitive drug use that eventually results in tolerance (the need for larger doses of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects that occur when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug using behavior (using drug despite serious efforts that have been put forth in order to reduce intake and despite negative consequence).
Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years, 4.0 percent reported using illegal drugs in the past month based on combined 2005 and 2006 NSDUH data. This rate was significantly lower than the rate among women aged 15 to 44 who were not pregnant (10.0 percent). The 2003 2004 combined rate of current illegal drug use among pregnant women (4.6 percent) was not significantly different from the 2005 2006 combined rate.
From 2002 to 2007, there was an increase among young adults aged 18 to 25 in the rate of current use of prescription pain relievers, from 4.1 to 4.6 percent. There were decreases in the use of hallucinogens (from 1.9 to 1.5 percent), Ecstasy (from 1.1 to 0.7 percent), and methamphetamine (from 0.6 to 0.4 percent).
The rate of MDE in the past year was higher for adolescent girls (13.3 percent) than for adolescent boys (4.5 percent).
According to a fairly recent report by Dr. Kim Mulvihill, Ambien addiction and abuse among teenagers is increasingly becoming a greater concern. Teens are abusing Ambien, many times in combination with alcohol, and Dr. Mulvihill notes that Ambien has been reported to have been used as a date-rape drug.
