In 2005, among adults with SPD in the past year who did not receive treatment and reported an unmet need for treatment, cost or insurance issues were the most frequently reported reason for not obtaining treatment (53.5 percent). Other reasons for not receiving treatment included not feeling a need for treatment at the time or believing that the problem could be handled without treatment (32.3 percent), stigma associated with treatment (26.2 percent), not knowing where to go for services (21.8 percent), and not having time (16.6 percent).
Nationally in 2002, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year (Table A.15). The District of Columbia had the highest rate of illegal drug abuse or dependence for persons aged 12 or older (4.3 percent), and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (six States). Only four of the States in the top fifth for illegal drug dependence or abuse also were in the top fifth for alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older: District of Columbia, Montana, New Mexico, and Rhode Island. Rhode Island had the highest rate for illegal drug dependence or abuse among persons aged 18 to 25 (13.9 percent); Vermont had the highest rate among teens (8.8 percent). There were no States common to the highest fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).
Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of current illegal drug use in 2001 was 8.3 percent in the West, 7.5 percent in the Northeast, 6.8 percent in the Midwest, and 6.2 percent in the South. By geographic division, rates ranged from 9.2 percent in New England division and 8.7 percent in the Pacific division to 6.2 percent in the West South Central division and 5.7 percent in the East South Central division.
Serious mental illness (SMI) among adults is defined in Public Law 102-321 as persons aged 18 or older who currently or at any time in the past year have had a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder (excluding developmental and substance use disorders) of sufficient duration to meet diagnostic criteria specified within DSM-IV that has resulted in functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities. In 2008, there were an estimated 9.8 million adults with SMI, representing 4.4 percent of adults.
Recent scientific studies suggest that women are up to 55 percent more likely than men to be prescribed highly addictive prescription drugs, particularly narcotics and anti-anxiety drugs.
