Rates of current use of illegal drugs were higher for young adults aged 18 to 25 (19.8 percent) than for teens aged 12 to 17 and adults aged 26 or older, with 16.3 percent using marijuana, 6.4 percent using prescription-type drugs nonmedically, 2.2 percent using cocaine, and 1.7 percent using hallucinogens.
Of those aged 12 or older who had not smoked cigarettes prior to the past year, the past year initiation rate for cigarettes was 2.7 percent in 2008, similar to the rate in 2007 (2.5 percent). Among teens aged 12 to 17 years who had not smoked cigarettes prior to the past year, the incidence rate showed no significant difference between 2007 (5.9 percent) and 2008 (6.2 percent).
