Among young adults 18 to 22 years old, full-time college students were less likely to be current cigarette smokers than their peers who were not enrolled full time in college. Cigarette use in the past month in 2008 was reported by 27.2 percent of full-time college students, less than the rate of 40.6 percent for those not enrolled full time.

An estimated 5.2 million persons were current nonmedical users of prescription pain relievers in 2006, which is more than the estimated 4.7 million in 2005. However, the change in the rate of current nonmedical use of pain relievers between 2005 and 2006 (1.9 and 2.1 percent, respectively) was not statistically significant.

In 2005, there were 953,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used hallucinogens for the first time within the past 12 months. This estimate was not significantly different from the estimates in 2004 (934,000) or 2003 (886,000), but it was lower than the estimate in 2002 (1.2 million).

Cocaine is abused using numerous methods. It is snorted, injected swallowed, applied to oral, vaginal, or even rectal mucous membranes and even mixed with liquor. Snorting cocaine is the most common method of administering the drug. When one snorts cocaine they typically place a line of coke, about 0.3 cm wide by 2.5 cm long, on a smooth surface. The finely divided powder is then snorted (inhaled quickly) into a nostril through a plastic or glass straw or a rolled currency bill. This ritual is usually repeated within a few minutes using the other nostril. There are also special spoons and other paraphernalia addicts use for snorting cocaine.

In 2006, among adults aged 18 or older who first tried marijuana at age 14 or younger, 12.9 percent were classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse, higher than the 2.2 percent of adults who had first used marijuana at age 18 or older.

In 2008, approximately one in nine teens aged 12 to 17 (11.1 percent) reported that they had participated in drug, tobacco, or alcohol prevention programs outside of school in the past year. This rate was similar to the 11.3 percent reported in 2007, but was lower than the rates reported in 2002 (12.7 percent) and 2003 (13.9 percent). The prevalence of past month use of illegal drugs, marijuana, cigarettes, or binge alcohol use among those who participated in these prevention programs outside of school was not significantly lower (8.9 percent, 5.6 percent, 8.0 percent, or 7.5 percent, respectively) than among those who did not (9.2 percent, 6.7 percent, 9.2 percent, or 8.9 percent, respectively).
