The average age at first nonmedical use of psychotherapeutics among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 22.2 years. For specific drug classes, the average ages were 20.1 years for stimulants, 21.2 years for pain relievers, 22.9 years for sedatives, and 25.7 years for tranquilizers.

In 2008, an estimated 20.1 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illegal drug users, meaning they had used an illegal drug during the month prior to the survey interview. This estimate represents 8.0 percent of the population aged 12 or older.

In 2006, 23.6 million persons aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem (9.6 percent of the persons aged 12 or older). Of these, 2.5 million (1.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older and 10.8 percent of those who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility. Thus, 21.1 million persons (8.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older) needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem but did not receive treatment at a specialty substance abuse facility in the past year. These estimates are similar to the estimates for 2005.

Among racial/ethnic groups, the rates of mental health service use for adults aged 18 or older in 2008 were 18.8 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 16.0 percent for whites, 13.2 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 8.7 percent for blacks (up from 6.8 percent in 2007), 6.8 percent for Hispanics, and 4.5 percent for Asians.
