The rates of binge alcohol use were 11.5 percent in nonmetropolitan areas, 10.2 percent in small metropolitan areas, and 9.3 percent in large metropolitan areas. Years of research have conclusively indicated to us that addictions to both prescription drugs and illegal drugs are the same in terms of providing drug recovery treatment However, no single type of drug rehab treatment is appropriate for all of the individuals that have developed an addiction to prescription drugs. The drug rehab treatment program must take into account the type of drug that has been abused and the needs of the individual.
Among adults aged 50 to 59, the rate of current illegal drug use increased between 2002 and 2005 . For those aged 50 to 54, the rate increased from 3.4 to 5.2 percent, but this increase was not statistically significant. Among those aged 55 to 59, the rate increased significantly from 1.9 to 3.4 percent. This may reflect the aging into these age groups of the baby boom cohort, which has a relatively higher rate of lifetime illegal drug use than older cohorts have.
In 2006, teens aged 12 to 17 who had MDE during the past year were more likely to report daily cigarette use in comparison with those who did not have MDE during the past year (5.2 vs. 2.5 percent).
