In 2007, 11.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had participated in substance use prevention programs outside of school within the past year. Almost four fifths (77.9 percent) reported having seen or heard drug or alcohol prevention messages from sources outside of school, lower than in 2002 when the percentage was 83.2 percent. Most (59.6 percent) teens reported in 2007 that they had talked with a parent in the past year about the dangers of drug, tobacco, or alcohol use.
The rate of underage drinking remained the same in 2004 as in 2002 and 2003. About 10.8 million persons aged 12 to 20 reported drinking alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview in 2004 (28.7 percent of this age group). Of these, nearly 7.4 million (19.6 percent) were binge drinkers, and 2.4 million (6.3 percent) were heavy drinkers.
In 2008, the type of mental health services most often received by adults aged 18 or older was prescription medication (11.3 percent), followed by outpatient services (6.8 percent). Rates of prescription medication and outpatient service use in 2008 were similar to the rates in 2007 (11.1 and 6.9 percent, respectively). Note that respondents could report receiving more than one type of mental health care.
