The percentage of eighth graders reporting crack cocaine use at least once in their lives increased from 2.7 percent in 1997 to 3.2 percent in 1998.

The definition for drug addiction is a condition where a person takes a drug every day, despite harm to themselves.

Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44, an estimated 10.6 percent reported current alcohol use, 4.5 percent reported binge drinking, and 0.8 percent reported heavy drinking. These rates were significantly lower than the rates for nonpregnant women in the same age group (54.0, 24.2, and 5.5 percent, respectively). Binge drinking during the first trimester of pregnancy was reported by 10.3 percent of pregnant women aged 15 to 44. All of these estimates by pregnancy status are based on data averaged over 2007 and 2008. The 2007-2008 estimate for first-trimester binge drinking is higher than in 2005-2006, when it was 4.6 percent.

Hallucinogens were used in the past month by 1.1 million persons (0.4 percent) in 2005, including 502,000 (0.2 percent) who had used Ecstasy. These estimates are similar to the corresponding estimates for 2004.

Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rate of current cigarette smoking in 2008 did not differ significantly by gender (9.0 percent for boys vs. 9.2 percent for girls). The rate declined for both boys and girls between 2007 and 2008 (10.0 vs. 9.0 percent for boys and 9.7 vs. 9.2 percent for girls), although the decline for girls was not statistically significant. From 2002 to 2008, the rate of current cigarette smoking among teens decreased for both boys (from 12.3 to 9.0 percent) and girls (from 13.6 to 9.2 percent).

The rate of illegal drug use in the past year was higher among teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year than among those who did not receive treatment or counseling (28.8 vs. 17.0 percent, respectively). This pattern also was observed for marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.
