Initiation of tranquilizer use has been increasing steadily since 1986. The number of initiates increased significantly from 734,000 in 1999 to 973,000 in 2000. Further, the age distribution of initiates shifted during the 1990s. In 1990, about 15 percent of initiates were teens aged 12 to 17; by the late 1990s, about one third of all initiates were teens.
Alcohol consumption levels also were associated with tobacco use. Among heavy alcohol users aged 12 or older, 60.6 percent smoked cigarettes in the past month, while only 20.4 percent of non-binge current drinkers and 16.7 percent of persons who did not drink alcohol in the past month were current smokers. Smokeless tobacco use and cigar use also were more prevalent among heavy drinkers (11.9 and 19.2 percent, respectively) than among non-binge drinkers (1.9 and 5.0 percent) and nondrinkers (1.9 and 2.2 percent).

In the 12 to 17 age group, seven States were in the top fifth for both use of any illegal drug and use of marijuana: Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, South Dakota, and Vermont. Seven States were common to the top fifth for current marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older and teens aged 12 to 17: Colorado, District of Columbia, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The rate of illegal drug use in the past year was higher among teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year than among those who did not receive treatment or counseling (28.8 vs. 17.0 percent, respectively). This pattern also was observed for marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics.
