In 2008, heavy drinking was reported by 6.9 percent of the population aged 12 or older, or 17.3 million people. This percentage is the same as the rate of heavy drinking in 2007 (6.9 percent).

Keep in mind that drug abusers will try to hide their symptoms and deny their substance abuse problems. There are, however, numerous ?warning signs? that strongly suggest drug involvement: expressing feelings of depression, exhaustion, or hopelessness ,talking incoherently ,the inability to relax or to have fun without taking drugs, employment problems and school absences ,irritability, wide mood swings, manic behavior, or angry outbursts.

More than one fifth (22.7 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking (having five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the 30 days prior to the survey) in 2005. This translates to about 55 million people, comparable with the estimate in 2004.

Individuals that are addicted to Lortab will often report the loss of a prescription or tell the doctor that the prescription has been stolen in an attempt to obtain more of the drug; most physicians see this as a red flag concerning addiction.

Current employment status was associated with illegal drug use in 2005. Among unemployed adults aged 18 or older, 17.1 percent were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the 8.2 percent of those employed full time and 10.4 percent of those employed part time. These rates were all similar to the corresponding rates in 2004.
