It is the responsibility of the treatment recovery program to help restore the individual to the person that they were before they started abusing drugs or alcohol.

Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of current illegal drug use in 2005 was 9.0 percent in the West, 8.9 percent in the Northeast, 7.5 percent in the South, and 7.5 percent in the Midwest.

Situational drug use where a drug is used to cope with particular situations, such as when an individual uses benzodiazepines in order to cope with the reason death of a loved one; unfortunately, many times situational use can develop into a full blown drug addiction.

Current illegal drug use rates remained stable from 2005 to 2006 among teens aged 12 to 17. However, rates of current use declined significantly from 2002 to 2006 for any illegal drug and several specific drugs (including marijuana, hallucinogens, LSD, Ecstasy, prescription type drugs used nonmedically, pain relievers, tranquilizers, and the use of illegal drugs other than marijuana). For any illegal drug use, the rates were 11.6 percent in 2002, 11.2 percent in 2003, 10.6 percent in 2004, 9.9 percent in 2005, and 9.8 percent in 2006.

While in a drug rehabilitation program the addict will detox off the drug or drugs they are addicted to and begin to experience what it feels like to live a life drug-free. In rehab, recovering addicts are in a supportive drug-free environment. They are able to address the issues that bought them to rehab. Often times, they will work one on one with trained counselors as well as in groups. Being surrounded by others in the recovery process provides them with many shoulders to lean on, not to mention the treatment benefit of professionally trained staff.
