Drug abuse side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild symptoms to comas and even death. In addition to the physical side effects that are related to substance abuse, there are many psychological side effects of drug abuse, the most serious symptoms being drug addiction and overdose.
There was a significant decrease in current use of crack among persons aged 18 to 22 who were not full-time college students, from 0.6 percent in 2005 to 0.2 percent in 2006. The rate was unchanged among full-time college students (0.1 percent in both 2005 and 2006).
In 2005, there were 2.1 million teens aged 12 to 17 (8.3 percent of this population) who needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem. Of this group, only 181,000 teens received treatment at a specialty facility (8.6 percent of teens who needed treatment), leaving 1.9 million teens who needed treatment for a substance use problem but did not receive it at a specialty facility.
The percentage of persons estimated to be dependent on illegal drugs in the past year was about 65 percent of those who were estimated to be dependent on or abused illegal drugs in the past year (Tables B.16 and B.17). State estimates for illegal drug dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 1.6 percent in Iowa to 3.0 percent in the District of Columbia. The highest rates of illegal drug dependence were among persons aged 18 to 25, with the highest rate in Massachusetts (8.3 percent) (Table B.17).
