Among adults aged 18 to 25, an estimated 58.0 percent of girls and 64.3 percent of boys reported current drinking in 2008. These rates are similar to those reported in 2007 (57.1 and 65.3 percent, respectively).
In 2005, there were 2.4 million current cocaine users aged 12 or older, which is more than in 2004 when the number was 2.0 million. However, the change in the rate of current use of cocaine between 2005 and 2004 (1.0 and 0.8 percent, respectively) was not statistically significant.
The specific illegal drugs that had the highest levels of past year dependence or abuse in 2005 were marijuana, followed by cocaine and pain relievers. Of the 6.8 million persons aged 12 or older classified with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs, 4.1 million were dependent on or abused marijuana in 2005. This number represents 1.7 percent of the total population aged 12 or older and 59.9 percent of all those classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse.
