Having MDE in the past year was associated with past year substance dependence or abuse in 2005. Among adults who had MDE in 2005, 19.9 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs, while among persons without MDE only 8.4 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs. Persons with MDE were more likely than those without MDE to be dependent on or abuse illegal drugs (8.3 vs. 2.1 percent) and alcohol (14.8 vs. 7.4 percent).

Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug. In 2001, it was used by 76 percent of current illegal drug users. Approximately 56 percent of current illegal drug users consumed only marijuana, 20 percent used marijuana and another illegal drug, and the remaining 24 percent used an illegal drug but not marijuana in the past month. Therefore, about 44 percent of current illegal drug users in 2001 (7.0 million Americans) used illegal drugs other than marijuana and hashish, with or without using marijuana as well.

One of the most important things that should be addressed in drug treatment is how the addict can begin to repair past damage they may have caused others, in addition to planning a strategy for their futures.

The illegal drug categories with the largest number of past year initiates among persons aged 12 or older were nonmedical use of pain relievers (2.1 million) and marijuana use (2.1 million). These estimates were not significantly different from the numbers in 2006.

The average lethal dose of cocaine by the IV route or by inhalation is about 750-800 mg. This is subject to significant individual variation because deaths have occurred in doctors' offices with as little as 25 mg of cocaine applied to the mucous membrane or the snorting of a single line in recreational use where the average dose of 1 line is 20 mg.
