Ecstasy is synthetic-it doesn't come from a plant like marijuana does. Ecstasy users often make the drug in secret "labs"-in trailers, basements, and even kitchens-hidden around the country. Often these heroin users are under the misconception that if they do not inject the drug they will not become addicted. Those who have entered rehab to recover from heroin addiction include every method of heroin user. Annual admissions to substance abuse treatment for primary heroin abuse increased from 228,000 in 1995 to 254,000 in 2005; however, the proportion of primary heroin admissions remained steady at about 14 to 15 percent of all admissions. Between 1995 and 2005, inhalation and injection accounted for at least 94 percent of annual primary heroin admissions. No one knows how many times a person can use ecstasy before becoming addicted or who's most vulnerable to ecstasy addiction. Genetic makeup, living environment, and other factors probably play a role in a person's susceptibility to addiction to any drug. Among the 311 pairs discordant for early marijuana initiation (just one twin in each pair smoked marijuana before age 17), the early initiators were 3.5 times as likely as their twins to attempt suicide, but no more likely to suffer from major depression. |
