The prevalence of SPD among women aged 18 or older (14.0 percent) was higher than that among men in that age group (8.4 percent).

Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years, 5.1 percent used illegal drugs in the past month based on data averaged for 2007 and 2008. This rate was significantly lower than the rate among women in this age group who were not pregnant (9.8 percent). Among pregnant women, the average rate of current illegal drug use in 2007-2008 (5.1 percent) did not change significantly from 2005-2006 (4.0 percent) and was similar to the rate observed in 2003-2004 (4.6 percent).

In 2008, 2.1 percent of 12 or 13 year olds and 7.6 percent of 14 or 15 year olds were current cigarette smokers. The percentage of current cigarette smokers among 16 or 17 year olds dropped from 18.9 percent in 2007 to 16.8 percent in 2008. Across age groups, current cigarette use peaked at 37.1 percent among persons aged 21 to 25 and those aged 26 to 29. About one third of 18 to 20 year olds and one third of 26 to 34 year olds (33.5 and 33.6 percent, respectively) smoked cigarettes in the past month. Less than a quarter (21.6 percent) of persons aged 35 or older in 2008 smoked cigarettes in the past month.
