Methadone does not get into the bones; this myth likely comes from the debilitating bone and joint pain that is often experienced during opioid withdrawal.
Major withdrawal symptoms peak between 48 and 72 hours after the last dose and typically subside after about a week; however, some individuals may show persistent withdrawal symptoms for months. Although heroin withdrawal is considered less dangerous than alcohol or barbiturate withdrawal, sudden withdrawal by heavily dependent users who are in poor health is occasionally fatal.
An individual's perception of the risks of substance use has been shown to be related to whether he or she actually uses the substance (e.g., Bachman, Johnston, & O'Malley, 1998). In 2002, the State with the lowest rate of perceived great risk of using marijuana occasionally (once a month) among persons aged 12 or older was Massachusetts.
