Among adults aged 18 or older with past year MDE in 2008, about two thirds of those with no insurance (64.1 percent) and private insurance (69.8 percent) received treatment for depression in the past year compared with higher rates for those with Medicaid or CHIP (83.1 percent) and 83.5 percent of adults with other health insurance (including Medicare, CHAMPUS, TRICARE, CHAMPVA, VA, and other sources of health care or insurance).
The number and the percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem remained unchanged between 2007 (2.0 million, 7.9 percent) and 2008 (1.9 million, 7.8 percent); however, there was a significant decrease between 2002 (2.3 million, 9.1 percent) and 2008. Of the 1.9 million teens who needed treatment in 2008, 143,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (about 7.4 percent of the teens who needed treatment), leaving 1.8 million who needed treatment for a substance use problem but did not receive it at a specialty facility.
In 2004, 19.9 percent of unemployed adults aged 18 or older were classified with dependence or abuse, while 10.5 percent of full-time employed adults and 11.9 percent of part-time employed adults were classified as such. However, most adults with substance dependence or abuse were employed either full or part time. Of the 20.3 million adults classified with dependence or abuse, 15.7 million (77.6 percent) were employed.
Heavy alcohol use and illegal drug abuse has been reported to be highest among construction and food service workers. Also, surveys have indicated that auto mechanics, laborers, and light-truck drivers are among several populations that are much more susceptible to alcohol abuse.
In 2008, 57.7 percent of boys aged 12 or older were current drinkers, higher than the rate for girls (45.9 percent). However, among teens aged 12 to 17, the percentage of boys who were current drinkers (14.2 percent) was similar to the rate for girls (15.0 percent).
The number of persons aged 12 or older initiating use of smokeless tobacco in the past year was higher in 2005 (1.1 million) than in 2002 (951,000) and 2003 (928,000), but it was similar to the number in 2004 (999,000). Three quarters (74.6 percent) of new initiates in 2005 were male, and more than half (53.9 percent) were under age 18 when they first used.
