Crime and heroin addiction have long been associated together. This is due to many reasons such as the fact that heroin importation and distribution are illegal. Also, heroin and crime are synonymous because many addicted people turn to theft and prostitution to obtain money to buy the drug. Violent competition between drug dealers has resulted in many murders and the deaths of innocent bystanders. From 1979 through 1990 arrests for heroin manufacture, sale, or possession in the United States held steady, but in the 1990s arrests rose as the drug's popularity began to increase once more.

Men were less likely than women to receive outpatient treatment (4.6 vs. 8.9 percent) and prescription medication (7.0 vs. 14.1 percent) for mental health problems in the past year. There was no gender difference in the rates of inpatient treatment (0.9 vs. 1.1 percent) in 2005.

It is ironic, considering the addiction properties in Methadone, that a multitude of doctor's in the U.S. chooses the drug for treating chronic pain in patients who are thought to have a propensity for addiction.

Eli Lilly and Company introduced Methadone as a medication for the treatment of pain, in 1947; since then, the drug has been widely used in treating heroin addiction.

Ambien abuse should be taken very seriously and treated like any other type of substance abuse. The proper counseling needs to be obtained in order to get help for this problem and to keep it from becoming life threatening.
