An estimated 852,000 persons received treatment for marijuana, and 554,000 persons received treatment for cocaine. (Note that the estimates of treatment by substance include persons reporting for more than one substance.)
Many successful drug rehab treatment programs believe that an individual's ability to accomplish a complete recovery from prescription drugs must be based on the belief that an individual is not powerless, and instead teach that the person must take complete responsibility for his or her own actions.

Many drugs such as marijuana and heroin, work by activating neurons because their chemical structure mimics that of a natural brain neurotransmitter. This similarity in structure "fools" receptors in the brain and allows the drugs to lock onto and activate the various nerve cells. Although drugs mimic these brain chemicals, they don't activate these nerve cells in the same way as a natural neurotransmitter, and continuous use of these chemicals can lead to abnormal messages being transmitted throughout the network of the brain.
