Most binge and heavy alcohol users were employed in 2006. Among 54.0 million adult binge drinkers, 42.9 million (79.4 percent) were employed either full or part time. Among 16.3 million heavy drinkers, 12.9 million (79.2 percent) were employed.

The lifetime prevalence of MDE was 15.7 percent among persons aged 18 to 25, 16.0 percent among persons aged 26 to 49 and, 11.6 percent among persons aged 50 or older.

More than one fifth (22.7 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking at least once in the 30 days prior to the survey in 2005. This translates to about 55 million people, comparable with the estimates reported since 2002.

In the 12 to 17 age group, the estimated percentage of those identified as having an alcohol abuse or dependence problem ranged from 3.1 percent in the District of Columbia to 9.9 percent in Montana. Among persons aged 18 to 25, the lowest percentage was found in California (13.4 percent) and the highest State percentage was in Nebraska (27.2 percent). Only Montana and Nebraska were in the highest fifth for the 12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older age groups.

In 2005, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an alcohol use problem was 19.4 million (8.0 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Thus, there were 17.8 million people who needed treatment but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for an alcohol use problem.
