Increases in the perceived risk of using a substance often are associated with decreases in the rate of use of that substance. Looking over the 5 year period, the proportion of teens aged 12 to 17 who reported perceiving great risk from smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day increased from 63.1 percent in 2002 to 68.7 percent in 2006.
