Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The inhalant abuse of the chemical trichloroethylene, which can be found in spot removers and degreasers, can cause cirrhosis of the liver and hearing and liver damage.
Estimates of past month use of any illegal drug ranged from a low of 6.3 percent in Utah to a high of 12.0 percent in Alaska for all persons aged 12 or older. Utah and Alaska were significantly lower and higher, respectively, compared with the national average (8.25 percent). (See Section 1.5 for a discussion of the proper use of the prediction intervals [PIs].) The States with the highest rates of any illegal drug use for all persons aged 12 or older were mostly in the West (six States) and the Northeast (three States). Colorado, New Hampshire, and Vermont were in the highest fifth for all persons aged 12 or older and for each of the age subgroups: 12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older. Most of the States that had the lowest rates in the Nation for persons aged 12 or older were either from the South (five States) or the Midwest (three States). New Jersey and Utah completed the lowest fifth.
Heroin overdoses, which can result whether the drug is snorted, smoked, or injected, can cause slow and shallow breathing, convulsions, coma, and even death.
When an individual is between treated at a Methadone Maintenance Clinic, they can get along without heroin without getting "dope sick." The irony is that is they would discontinue their Methadone use; they would rapidly descend into a withdrawal that is more painful than if they would have chosen to withdraw from the original opiate addiction.
Family and friends can play critical roles in helping to motivate individuals with drug and alcohol addictions to enter treatment, fully complete the program and maintain long term sobriety. It is extremely important to note that despite the support that is given to help an effort to help an individual to maintain a state of abstinence, ultimately they may choose to use.
Across geographic regions in 2006, underage current alcohol use rates were higher in the Northeast (32.0 percent) and Midwest (29.7 percent) than in the South (25.8 percent). The rate in the West (28.1 percent) was similar to rates in the South and Midwest regions, but significantly lower than the rate in the Northeast.
