The physical aspect of the drug or alcohol addiction can be treated by the detoxification component of the Monaca, Pennsylvania Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Center; a treatment program will be able to assist the individual by helping to alleviate some of the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that accompany the detox process. The withdrawal symptoms occur because the brain has adapted to the consistent use of the substance; after a period of time, it will take more and more of the substance, in order to produce the same desired effects. Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Hallucinogens were used in the past month by 1.0 million persons (0.4 percent) in 2006, including 528,000 (0.2 percent) who had used Ecstasy. These estimates are similar to the corresponding estimates for 2005. However, lifetime use of Ecstasy increased from 10.2 million persons in 2002 to 12.3 million in 2006 (4.3 to 5.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older), but past year use of Ecstasy decreased from 3.2 million (1.3 percent) to 2.1 million (0.9 percent) over the same period.

The top fifth for average annual incidence of marijuana for persons aged 12 or older was comprised mostly of States from the West (five) and from the Northeast (four). Seven States ranked in the top fifth for marijuana incidence in the 12 or older age group also ranked in the top fifth for past month marijuana use (Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Because most initiation of marijuana takes place at age 25 or earlier (Gfroerer, Wu, & Penne, 2002), the rates of initiation in the 26 or older age group were much lower than those in the 12 to 17 and 18 to 25 age groups: 0.1, 6.6, and 6.8, respectively. Vermont had the highest rate among teens aged 12 to 17 (10.4), while New Hampshire had the highest rate among persons aged 18 to 25 (11.1) (Table B.5). In the 12 or older age group, seven States from the South were ranked in the lowest fifth for incidence of marijuana.

In 2005, there were 11.2 million adults aged 18 or older (5.1 percent) who reported an unmet need for treatment or counseling for mental health problems in the past year. This included 5.7 million adults who did not receive mental health treatment. Among the 5.5 million adults who did receive treatment or counseling for a mental health problem in the past year, 19.4 percent reported an unmet need. (Unmet need among adults who received treatment may reflect a delay in treatment or a perception of insufficient treatment.)

Among persons aged 12 or older who used pain relievers nonmedically in the past 12 months, 59.8 percent reported that the source of the drug the most recent time they used was from a friend or relative for free. Another 16.8 percent reported they got the drug from one doctor. Only 4.3 percent got the pain relievers from a drug dealer or other stranger, and only 0.8 percent reported buying the drug on the Internet.

Opiates affect many places in the brain and nervous system, including the limbic system, which controls emotions. Acting here, opiates can produce feelings of pleasure, relaxation, and contentment.

Long-term methamphetamine abuse can significantly alter the way the brain functions and cause damage to the dopamine system.
