In 2008, among persons who received their most recent substance use treatment at a specialty facility in the past year, 49.5 percent reported using their "own savings or earnings" as a source of payment for their most recent specialty treatment, 36.1 percent reported using private health insurance, 24.7 percent reported using Medicaid, 22.3 percent reported using public assistance other than Medicaid, 17.5 percent reported using Medicare, and 16.5 percent reported using funds from family members. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008 and between 2002 and 2008. (Note that persons could report more than one source of payment.)
Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (i.e., part-time college students and persons not currently enrolled in college) to use alcohol in the past month, binge drink, and drink heavily. Among full-time college students in 2008, 61.0 percent were current drinkers, 40.5 percent binge drank, and 16.3 percent were heavy drinkers. The percentage of teens reporting that it would be easy to obtain marijuana declined between 2002 and 2003, from 55.0 to 53.6 percent, and again between 2003 and 2004, to 52.2 percent. The percentage of teens reporting that LSD would be easy to obtain also decreased between 2002 and 2004, from 19.4 to 16.9 percent, as did the perceived availability of heroin (15.8 to 14.0 percent).
