Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Methadone often takes over twenty hours to leave the body once it's been taken; because each person's body metabolized the drug differently, this could vary from person to person.
For many years in the U.S. there has been much controversy concerning GHB; some touted it as a "safe" alternative to alcohol and conventional sleep aids. Currently, it is illegal to possess or to traffic GHB in Canada and also in the United States.
Nationally, 6.2 percent of all persons aged 12 or older reported using marijuana in the past month in 2002.2003. Because marijuana is the predominant substance used by those using an illegal drug, States that had high prevalence rates for any illegal drug also had high prevalence rates for past month use of marijuana. Eight out of ten States in the top fifth for use of an illegal drug for persons aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for past month use of marijuana. In the 12 to 17 age group, seven States were in the top fifth for both use of any illegal drug and use of marijuana: Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Vermont. Eight States were common to the top fifth for past month marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older and teens aged 12 to 17: Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The States with the lowest rates of past month use of marijuana among persons aged 12 or older were in the South: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. The other States in the lowest fifth were Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, New Jersey, and Utah .
There were no statistically significant changes between 2005 and 2006 in the rate of current illegal drug use for any racial/ethnic subgroup among persons aged 12 or older or among teens aged 12 to 17. Among young adults aged 18 to 25 who reported two or more races, the rate of current illegal drug use decreased from 31.8 percent in 2005 to 22.4 percent in 2006. In that 18 to 25 year age group, 28.5 percent of American Indians or Alaska Natives, 22.7 percent of whites, 17.3 percent of blacks, 13.9 percent of Hispanics, and 9.0 percent of Asians were current illegal drug users in 2006.
Most teens aged 12 to 17 believed their parents would "strongly disapprove" of their using substances. In 2005, 91.1 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, while the remaining 8.9 percent believed their parents would "somewhat disapprove" or "neither approve nor disapprove." A majority of teens (90.2 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice, and 88.9 percent reported their parents would strongly disapprove of their having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day. These rates of perceived parental disapproval in 2005 were similar to those seen in 2004.
As was the case from 2002 through 2005, the rate of substance dependence or abuse for boys aged 12 or older in 2006 was about twice as high as the rate for girls (12.3 vs. 6.3 percent). Among teens aged 12 to 17, however, the rate of substance dependence or abuse among boys was similar to the rate among girls (8.0 vs. 8.1 percent).
