The usual route for medical use is oral administration. There was also no significant change in the number receiving treatment for alcohol (2.1 to 2.2 million persons). However, between 2000 and 2001, the number receiving treatment for illegal drugs increased significantly from 1.3 million (0.6 percent) to 1.7 million (0.8 percent).

Among persons aged 12 or older, the overall rate of past month marijuana use in 2008 (6.1 percent) was similar to the rate in 2007 and the rates in earlier years going back to 2002.
