In 2005, adults with MDE in the past year were more likely than those without MDE to have used an illegal drug in the past year (26.8 vs. 12.7 percent). A similar pattern was observed for specific types of past year illegal drug use, such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics.

The rate of current hallucinogen use among teens aged 12 to 17 increased from 0.7 percent in 2007 to 1.0 percent in 2008.

Amphetamine is used by professional, collegiate and high school athletes for its strong stimulant effect.

Among teens with past year dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs or alcohol, 21.7 percent had at least one MDE in the past year, higher than the 7.7 percent with MDE in the past year among adolescents with no past year dependence or abuse.

In 2005, probation status was associated with substance dependence or abuse. The rate of substance dependence or abuse was 37.2 percent among adults who were on probation during the past year, which is significantly higher than the rate among adults who were not on probation during the past year (8.7 percent).
