The abuse of prescription opiate analgesics, especially oxycodone and hydrocodone, has become a serious problem.
There were 18.7 million persons aged 12 or older classified with dependence on or abuse of alcohol in 2005 (7.7 percent). This estimate has remained stable since 2002.
The cultivation of opium in Afghanistan reached its peak in 1999, when 225,000 acres - 350 square miles - of poppies were sown. The following year the Taliban banned poppy cultivation, a move which cut production by 94 per cent. By 2001 only 30 square miles of land was in use for growing opium poppies. A year later, after American and British troops had removed the Taliban and installed the interim government, the land under cultivation leapt back to 285 square miles, with Afghanistan supplanting Burma to become the world's largest opium producer once more.
Opiate addiction leads to a variety of health problems including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and other infectious diseases.
Of those aged 12 or older who had not smoked cigarettes prior to the past year, the past year initiation rate for cigarettes was 2.7 percent in 2008, similar to the rate in 2007 (2.5 percent).
