Cigarette smoking in the past month was less prevalent among adults with more education. Patterns of alcohol use across county type were different for teens and adults in 2001. Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rates of past month alcohol use and heavy alcohol use were higher in rural areas than in large metropolitan areas (for past month use, the difference was marginally significant, p < .07). Among adults, the rates of past month alcohol use were higher in large metropolitan areas than in rural areas, while there were no differences in heavy use rates across these county types.
