Cigarette smoking in the past month was less prevalent among adults with more education. Among adults aged 18 or older, current cigarette use in 2006 was reported by 35.6 percent of those who had not completed high school, 31.9 percent of high school graduates who did not attend college, 27.7 percent of persons with some college, and 14.3 percent of college graduates. Patterns of alcohol use across county type were different for teens and adults in 2001. Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rates of past month alcohol use and heavy alcohol use were higher in rural areas than in large metropolitan areas (for past month use, the difference was marginally significant, p < .07). Among adults, the rates of past month alcohol use were higher in large metropolitan areas than in rural areas, while there were no differences in heavy use rates across these county types.
