Research shows that abuse of Ecstasy can cause serious health problems and, in some instances, even death.

The average age of someone using marijuana for the first time dropped from 17.8 in 2008 to 17.0 in 2009.

The average age at first smokeless tobacco use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 in 2008 was 18.9 years, which was not significantly different from the 2007 estimate (18.0 years). For boys, the 2008 estimate of this average age (18.8 years) was significantly higher than the 2007 estimate (17.4 years). However, for girls, the 2007 and 2008 age at first use estimates (19.7 and 19.0 years, respectively) did not significantly differ.

Although cocaine overdose is not common, it can occur and can be fatal.

In 2008, an estimated 2.9 million persons aged 12 or older used an illegal drug for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to almost 8,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the number in 2007 (2.7 million). About three fifths of initiates (56.7 percent) were younger than age 18 when they first used, and 54.9 percent of new users were female. The average age at initiation among persons aged 12 to 49 was 18.8 years.

There were no changes between 2002 and 2005 in the percentages of persons with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs (3.0 percent in 2002, 2.9 percent in 2003, 3.0 percent in 2004, and 2.8 percent in 2005) and dependence on or abuse of alcohol (7.7 percent in 2002, 7.5 percent in 2003, 7.8 percent in 2004, and 7.7 percent in 2005). However, there was a decrease in the rate of dependence on or abuse of marijuana from 2004 to 2005 (1.9 to 1.7 percent).
