Rates of substance dependence or abuse were associated with current employment status in 2008. A higher percentage of unemployed adults aged 18 or older were classified with dependence or abuse (19.0 percent) than were full-time employed adults (10.2 percent) or part-time employed adults (11.0 percent).

Based on 2005 2008 combined data, the five most often reported reasons for not receiving illegal drug or alcohol use treatment among persons aged 12 or older who needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility and perceived a need for treatment included (a) not ready to stop using (38.8 percent), (b) no health coverage and could not afford cost (32.1 percent), (c) possible negative effect on job (12.3 percent), (d) not knowing where to go for treatment (12.0 percent), and (e) concern that receiving treatment might cause neighbors/community to have negative opinion (11.8 percent).

In 2008, there were 114,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used heroin for the first time within the past 12 months. The average age at first use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 23.4 years in 2008. There were no significant changes in the number of initiates or in the average age at first use from 2007 to 2008. The number of heroin initiates was not significantly different from the number in 2002 (117,000).

The government has implemented strict guidelines regarding drug testing. These guidelines were developed by The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). These government agencies mandate that companies that use commercial class driver?s licenses for their employees must have a specific drug testing system in place. These requirements mandate that each drug test will be conducted for the detection of five specific groups of drugs, which are marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and PCP.

In 2006, 31.7 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had attended religious services 25 or more times in the past year; 77.0 percent expressed agreement with the statement that religious beliefs are a very important part of their lives; 68.3 percent agreed with the statement that religious beliefs influence how they make decisions in life; and 35.1 percent agreed with the statement that it is important for their friends to share their religious beliefs. Findings for these measures remained unchanged from 2005 to 2006. Lifetime, past year, and past month use of illegal drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol (including binge alcohol) were lower among teens who agreed with these statements than among those who disagreed. For example, past month illegal drug use was reported by 7.6 percent of those who agreed that religious beliefs are a very important part of life compared with 17.1 percent of those who disagreed with that statement.
