This corresponds to 3.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older and is significantly higher than the rate in 2000 (3.1 percent) but similar to the rate in 1999 (3.4 percent). Among young adults aged 18 to 25 years, 12.4 percent drove under the influence of illegal drugs at least once in the past year.

The intensity of withdrawal symptoms from Vicodin most often depends on the degree of the addiction. For example, the symptoms of withdrawal from Vicodin may grow stronger for twenty-four to seventy-two hours and then gradually decline over a period of seven to fourteen days.

The definition of a person needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug problem is that he or she meets the criteria for abuse of or dependence on illegal drugs according to the DSM-IV, but has not received specialty treatment for an illegal drug problem in the past year. Specialty treatment is treatment received at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility (inpatient or outpatient), hospital (inpatient only), or mental health center.

In 2005, 59.8 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had talked at least once in the past year with at least one of their parents about the dangers of drug, tobacco, or alcohol use—similar to the 60.3 percent in 2004. Among teens who reported having had such conversations with their parents, rates of current alcohol, cigarette, and illegal drug use were lower than among teens who did not talk about substance abuse. For example, past month binge drinking was reported by 9.2 percent of teens who had talked with their parents about drug, tobacco, or alcohol use compared with 11.0 percent of those who had not. Past month use of marijuana was lower among teens who had talked with their parents (6.4 percent) than among those who had not (7.4 percent).
