According to a 2006 survey, there were 2.4 million current Opiate users aged 12 or older, which was the same as in 2005 but greater than in 2002 when the number was 2.0 million.

Serious mental illness (SMI) among adults is defined in Public Law 102-321 as persons aged 18 or older who currently or at any time in the past year have had a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder (excluding developmental and substance use disorders) of sufficient duration to meet diagnostic criteria specified within DSM-IV that has resulted in functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities. In 2008, there were an estimated 9.8 million adults with SMI, representing 4.4 percent of adults.

According to the most recent government statistics that have been made available, approximately 30 million people in the United States have an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Rates of marijuana use among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders are higher than rates for any other illegal drug.

The rate of past month tobacco use among teens aged 12 to 17 decreased from 12.4 percent in 2007 to 11.4 percent in 2008. One-half million or 2.2 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 used smokeless tobacco in 2008 compared with 2.0 percent in 2002; this slight increase was not statistically significant.
