New Mexico had the highest percentage of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem in 2002 (3.5 percent). The other States in the top fifth were mainly in the West (Alaska, Arizona, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington) or in the Northeast (Rhode Island and Vermont). California had the largest total number of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem, approximately 819,000, or about 13.0 percent of the total for the Nation.
The percentage of the population with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs increased from 2000 to 2001 (1.9 to 2.5 percent). There were significant increases from 2000 to 2001 in the rates for illegal drug abuse (0.7 to 0.9 percent) as well in the rates for illegal drug dependence (1.2 to 1.6 percent). There were significant increases in the percentage of the population with dependence on or abuse of marijuana and hashish (1.3 to 1.5 percent) and the percentage of the population with dependence on or abuse of pain relievers (0.3 to 0.4 percent).
The number of persons with substance dependence or abuse was stable between 2002 and 2008 (22.0 million in 2002, 21.6 million in 2003, 22.5 million in 2004, 22.2 million in 2005, 22.6 million in 2006, 22.3 million in 2007, and 22.2 million in 2008).
Among persons aged 12 or older who used pain relievers nonmedically in the past 12 months, 59.8 percent reported that the source of the drug the most recent time they used was from a friend or relative for free. Another 16.8 percent reported they got the drug from one doctor. Only 4.3 percent got the pain relievers from a drug dealer or other stranger, and only 0.8 percent reported buying the drug on the Internet.
In the 18 to 25 age group, the rate of past month use of these drugs was highest in Rhode Island (14.1 percent); among teens, the rate was highest in North Carolina (8.1 percent) (Table A.5). Only two of the States in the top fifth for these drugs among teens and three States in the top fifth among those aged 18 to 25 also were in the top fifth among the 12 or older age group.
In 2005, heavy drinking was reported by 6.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older, or 16 million people. This rate is similar to the rate of heavy drinking in 2004 (6.9 percent). Heavy drinking is defined as binge drinking on at least 5 days in the past 30 days.
