Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
In 2005, there were 2.1 million persons who had used marijuana for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to approximately 6,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the numbers in 2004 (2.1 million), 2003 (2.0 million), and 2002 (2.2 million).
There were no statistically significant changes between 2005 and 2006 in the rate of current illegal drug use for any racial/ethnic subgroup among persons aged 12 or older or among teens aged 12 to 17. Among young adults aged 18 to 25 who reported two or more races, the rate of current illegal drug use decreased from 31.8 percent in 2005 to 22.4 percent in 2006. In that 18-to-25-year age group, 28.5 percent of American Indians or Alaska Natives, 22.7 percent of whites, 17.3 percent of blacks, 13.9 percent of Hispanics, and 9.0 percent of Asians were current illegal drug users in 2006.
Contrary to popular belief, the 'typical' overdose victim is not a young novice or inexperienced user. Rather, the average age of death reported is in the late twenties and early thirties. Eighty per cent of deaths were classified as dependent, regular users. Given that the mean age of death reported in most studies is approximately 30 years, and that heroin-using careers typically start in the late teens, most fatal cases have been using heroin for a considerable amount of time prior to death. They do not, on the whole, appear to be novice users but older dependent heroin users. Deaths do occur among recreational heroin users as well. It is estimated that 17% of heroin overdose deaths are by recreational/weekend users.
Among young adults 18 to 22 years old, full time college students were less likely to be current cigarette smokers than their peers who were not enrolled full time in college. Cigarette use in the past month in 2008 was reported by 27.2 percent of full time college students, less than the rate of 40.6 percent for those not enrolled full time.
According to a 2005 NIDA-funded study, many smart teens are turning their backs on ecstasy. Since 2001, the percentage of 8th-graders who have ever tried ecstasy has dropped from 5.2% in 2001 to 2.8% in 2005.
Current illegal drug use among persons aged 12 or older varied by race/ethnicity in 2008, with the lowest rate among Asians (3.6 percent). Rates were 14.7 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 10.1 percent for blacks, 9.5 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 8.2 percent for whites, 7.3 percent of Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 6.2 percent for Hispanics.
