The vast majority of drug rehab programs in Centertown typically focus on the two-fold nature of drug addiction and alcoholism: physical and psychological addiction. Physical addiction can be treated by a detoxification program in Centertown with a detox treatment procedure to assist with the painful withdrawal symptoms which manifest themselves when a person discontinues the consumption of a drug or drugs that they are addicted to. With habitual use of a psychoactive substance the brain gradually adapts to the presence of the drug so the desired effect becomes minimal. This is how physical tolerance develops to drugs such as heroin, amphetamines, cocaine, nicotine or alcohol. It also explains why more and more of the drug is needed to get the same high with habitual use of the drug. The abrupt cessation of consuming an addictive drug can lead to serious withdrawal symptoms where the body may take weeks or months (depending on the drug involved) to return to normal function. The withdrawal symptoms from certain substances, such as heroin, can induce severe and painful withdrawal symptoms, and be quite prolonged.

This is because research into the brain of drug addicts shows changes in the way their brain functions long after they have discontinued using drugs or alcohol. This is the main reason why even an individual with will power as strong as steel may find it extremely difficult to overcome drug addiction without professional treatment. With so many obstacles such as triggers, drug cravings, and changes in the way their brain functions due to habitual drug use, it is no surprise why so many people attend a drug treatment program each year to successfully recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

Cocaine is abused using numerous methods. It is snorted, injected swallowed, applied to oral, vaginal, or even rectal mucous membranes and even mixed with liquor. Snorting cocaine is the most common method of administering the drug. When one snorts cocaine they typically place a line of coke, about 0.3 cm wide by 2.5 cm long, on a smooth surface. The finely divided powder is then snorted (inhaled quickly) into a nostril through a plastic or glass straw or a rolled currency bill. This ritual is usually repeated within a few minutes using the other nostril. There are also special spoons and other paraphernalia addicts use for snorting cocaine. The number of ED visits involving heroin/morphine increased 15 percent, from 84,409 to 97,287 Crime and heroin addiction have long been associated together. This is due to many reasons such as the fact that heroin importation and distribution are illegal. Also, heroin and crime are synonymous because many addicted people turn to theft and prostitution to obtain money to buy the drug. Violent competition between drug dealers has resulted in many murders and the deaths of innocent bystanders. From 1979 through 1990 arrests for heroin manufacture, sale, or possession in the United States held steady, but in the 1990s arrests rose as the drug's popularity began to increase once more. Three quarters of all heroin brought into the United States comes from South America and Mexico (with South America making up the majority of this amount) |
