Like many addictive drugs, when the level of Xanax in the body falls below a certain threshold, uncomfortable symptoms will appear and another dose of the medication will need to be taken in order to feel "better".

Pure heroin, which is a white powder with a bitter taste, is rarely sold on the streets.

Today it is estimated that 22 to 25 million people have tried cocaine at least once. Conservative estimates indicate that there are over two million cocaine addicts in the United States today.

In more hopeful news, a recent survey of high school juniors and seniors found that 78% felt that heroin was "too great a risk" to try.

Increases in the perceived risk of using a substance often are associated with decreases in the rate of use of that substance. Looking over the 5 year period, the proportion of teens aged 12 to 17 who reported perceiving great risk from smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day increased from 63.1 percent in 2002 to 68.7 percent in 2006. The rate of past month cigarette smoking among teens aged 12 to 17 dropped from 13.0 to 10.4 percent during the same period.
