Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Another one of the risks of heroin use is that all heroin users--not just those who inject the drug-- becoming addicted. Individuals who abuse heroin over time develop a tolerance for the drug, meaning that they must use increasingly larger doses to achieve the same intensity or effect they experienced when they first began using the drug. Heroin ceases to produce feelings of pleasure in users who develop tolerance; instead, these users must continue taking the drug simply to feel normal. Addicted individuals who stop using the drug may experience withdrawal symptoms, which include heroin craving, restlessness, muscle and bone pain, and vomiting.
In 2005, there were 3.4 million teens aged 12 to 17 years (13.7 percent of the population aged 12 to 17 years old) who had at least one MDE in their lifetime and 2.2 million teens (8.8 percent) who had MDE during the past year.
Current illegal drug use differed by employment status in 2006. Among adults aged 18 or older, the rate of drug use was higher for unemployed persons (18.5 percent) than for those who were employed full time (8.8 percent) or part time (9.4 percent). These rates were all similar to the corresponding rates in 2005.
The rate of illegal drug dependence or abuse among boys aged 12 or older was similar between 2005 and 2006 (3.5 percent in 2005 and 3.7 percent in 2006). The rate for girls remained unchanged during the same period (2.1 percent in 2005 vs. 2.0 percent in 2006).
Much research that has been conducted regarding substance abuse has indicated that long-term drug addiction causes significant changes in brain function that persist long after the individual stops using drugs.
Some individuals who abuse prescription medication such as Ativan take sedative type drugs to bring them down after using stimulants such as ecstasy or cocaine; others often take benzodiazepines to enhance the effects of alcohol. Benzodiazepines are also commonly known to be used as replacement drugs when a user's first drug of choice is not available.
