Although amphetamines were once prescribed to control obesity and depression, their use for these disorders has been discontinued because patients became quickly and seriously dependent.

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002.2003, only five of the States ranked in the highest fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the highest fifth. Colorado had the highest rate of past year cocaine use (3.9 percent) among persons aged 12 or older; the District of Columbia had the highest rate (3.7 percent) among those aged 26 or older; Rhode Island had the highest rate (12.1 percent) among those aged 18 to 25; and Arizona had the highest rate (3.2 percent) among teens aged 12 to 17 (Table B.7). Arizona and Colorado were the only States that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

Vicodin and other opiate type drugs travel along specific neurological pathways in the brain in order to block the sensation of pain in the body.

The rate of current marijuana use among teens aged 12 to 17 declined from 8.2 percent in 2002 to 6.7 percent in 2007. The rate decreased for both boys (from 9.1 to 7.5 percent) and girls (from 7.2 to 5.8 percent).

In 2008, adults aged 26 or older were less likely to be current drug users than teens aged 12 to 17 or young adults aged 18 to 25 (5.9 vs. 9.3 and 19.6 percent, respectively). However, there were more drug users aged 26 or older (11.3 million) than users in the 12-to-17-year age group (2.3 million) and 18-to-25-year age group (6.5 million) combined.

Although heroin withdrawal is considered less dangerous than alcohol or barbiturate withdrawal, sudden withdrawal by heavily dependent heroin users who are in poor health is occasionally fatal.
