In 2006, rates of substance dependence or abuse for persons aged 12 or older showed evidence of differences by region, with the West (10.2 percent) and Midwest (10.0 percent) having higher rates than the South (8.5 percent) and Northeast (8.4 percent). However, rates for substance dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older in 2006 did not vary significantly by county type (9.4 percent in large metropolitan counties, 9.0 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 8.9 percent in nonmetropolitan counties).

In 2006, 79.4 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported having seen or heard drug or alcohol prevention messages from sources outside of school, which declined from 81.1 percent in 2005. The prevalence of past month use of illegal drugs, marijuana, cigarettes, or binge alcohol was lower among those who reported having such exposure (9.2 percent, 6.2 percent, 9.5 percent, and 10.0 percent, respectively) than among those who reported having no such exposure (12.0 percent, 8.5 percent, 13.8 percent, and 11.5 percent, respectively).

The past year prevalence of MDE was higher among adult girls than among adult boys (8.1 vs. 4.6 percent). Among women, past year MDE rates were higher in the younger age groups (12.1 percent for 18 to 25 year olds, 8.8 percent for 26 to 49 year olds) compared with those 50 or older (6.0 percent).

In 2008, 31.7 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had attended religious services 25 or more times in the past year, which was similar to the rates in 2007 (31.4 percent) and 2002 (33.0 percent). Also, 75.0 percent agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that religious beliefs are a very important part of their lives, which was similar to the 76.1 percent reported in 2007, but was lower than the 78.2 percent reported in 2002. In addition, 33.8 percent agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that it is important for their friends to share their religious beliefs, which was lower than the rates in 2007 (35.1 percent) and 2002 (35.8 percent).

Rates of current cigarette use among adults aged 18 or older decreased among unemployed persons between 2002 and 2005; rates were 49.8 percent in 2002, 42.7 percent in 2003, 44.1 percent in 2004, and 43.8 percent in 2005. Among adults who were employed full time, current use of smokeless tobacco increased from 3.7 percent in 2004 to 4.2 percent in 2005.

Between 2005 and 2007, there was an 11% increase in the number of Meth dependent users.
