Of this group, only 136,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (11.2 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment), leaving 1.1 million teens who needed treatment but did not receive it at a specialty facility.
Major withdrawal symptoms peak between 48 and 72 hours after the last dose and typically subside after about a week; however, some individuals may show persistent withdrawal symptoms for months. Although heroin withdrawal is considered less dangerous than alcohol or barbiturate withdrawal, sudden withdrawal by heavily dependent users who are in poor health is occasionally fatal.
In 2005, there were 4.3 million persons aged 12 or older who had used alcohol for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to approximately 12,000 initiates per day. The number of alcohol initiates was significantly greater than in 2002 (3.9 million), but similar to the numbers in 2003 (4.1 million) and 2004 (4.4 million).
Studies show that about 9 percent of marijuana users become addicted, a number that increases among those who start young (to about 17 percent) and among daily users (25-50 percent).
In 2005, adults aged 18 or older who were on parole or a supervised release from jail during the past year were more likely to be classified with dependence on or abuse of a substance (33.7 percent) than those who were not on parole or supervised release during the past year (9.1 percent).
In 2007-2008, 42.8 percent of past year methamphetamine users aged 12 or older reported that they obtained the methamphetamine they used most recently from a friend or relative for free, lower than the 49.7 percent reported in 2006-2007.
