The specific illegal drugs that had the highest levels of past year dependence or abuse in 2005 were marijuana, followed by cocaine and pain relievers. Of the 6.8 million persons aged 12 or older classified with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs, 4.1 million were dependent on or abused marijuana in 2005. This number represents 1.7 percent of the total population aged 12 or older and 59.9 percent of all those classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse. There were 1.5 million persons who were classified with dependence on or abuse of cocaine, about the same as the number classified with dependence on or abuse of pain relievers.
Screening for prescription drug abuse could easily be incorporated into routine medical visits by asking direct questions about substance abuse history and current prescriptions.
Among teens, different age groups engaged in the use of different types of illegal drugs in the past month.
